Semiotics of a Can Opener

CHANNELS Typography -  Print Design - System Design - Image

GOAL: Create a collection of designs made solely of type and image based on the semiotics of a common household object. In this case, a can opener.
MY TAKE:
I chose to photograph a can opener and explore the many different interpretations of a can opener itself, and the separate words ‘can’ and ‘opener’.

PROCESS:

SOFTWARE:
Illustrator
Photoshop
Indesign

The process for this piece started with a deep dive into the history of the object and all known interpretations or uses of the project. The idea was to be able to fully understand the meaning (literal, and metaphorical) of the object. Once the research phase was concluded, it was time for photography. I experimented with several different kinds of shots and lenses to capture every possible aspect. After some quick photo editing I was left with my best shots, which I then started experimenting with adding typography into the composition.
